Shanghai’s First Highland Games Brings Scottish Spirit to NAIS Pudong

Shanghai’s first Highland Games hosted at NAIS Pudong - Highland Games

On Saturday 13 September, NAIS Pudong proudly hosted Shanghai’s very first Highland Games in partnership with Shanghai Scottish. The event was a resounding success, bringing together more than 400 guests for a lively celebration of Scottish culture, tradition, and community spirit.

The day began in true style with the stirring sounds of the pipe band during the Opening Ceremony, led by our Honorary Chieftain, Betty Barr. At 92 years old, Betty is a Scottish author who has lived in Shanghai for more than 50 years, and her presence and stories gave the occasion a unique sense of history and authenticity.

Guests were treated to a full programme of traditional events and entertainment. Athletes competed in classic Highland Games challenges including the Caber Toss, Tyre Flip, Weights for Distance, and Hammer Throw, each testing strength, skill, and determination. Throughout the afternoon, the atmosphere was lifted by outstanding live performances from the Tipsy Fiddler Ceilidh Band, who invited the audience to join in a traditional Scottish dance, and the NACIS Pipe Band, who impressed with their talent and energy.

No Highland Games would be complete without music and food, and our generous sponsors ensured both were unforgettable. Homeslice Pizza brought a Scottish twist to their famous pizzas with their crowd-pleasing Haggis Pizza, while Breakfast Champion served up hearty favourites including Haggis, Neeps & Tatties and Black Pudding. These Scottish-inspired treats proved incredibly popular and added a delicious flavour of Scotland to the day.

The event was more than just a competition. It was a true celebration of heritage and cultural pride. From kilts and bagpipes to dance and athletics, the Highland Games created an atmosphere that captured the very best of Scottish tradition while embracing the diversity and community spirit of Shanghai.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us for this landmark event, and especially to our partners and sponsors who made the day possible. Shanghai’s first Highland Games was a fantastic success, and we look forward to welcoming the community back for more celebrations in the future.
