Year 3: Mini Cities, Big Ideas

Year 3: Mini Cities, Big Ideas - Year 3 Lego Communities
We brought to life our favourite ideas using Lego ...

Year 3s Topic has been about Communities and, as part of this topic, we have been looking at UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities.

After watching a video to introduce it, we watched another about the design process. We defined our problem and did a bit of research about what types of things we have or would like to have in our community/city to make life better for all. Then we started to develop a possible solution and design it by making plans of what our community would look like using a key to define the different types of things we would include.

Last week, we brought to life our favourite ideas using Lego. Children worked in small groups and compared their plans to decide how they would create their mini communities. They developed many of their personal goals such as communication and adaptability to decide on what to build and how to bring to life their ideas. The different coloursrepresenteddifferent types of services/amenities to make sure that key services and places were included in our communities.

The children are very proud of their creations and when you combine our communities together we have a very comprehensive place including great transport links (including an airport), entertainment areas (including a theme park) and many essential services including many schools because, as they children put it, everyone wants to learn in different ways and places!
